5TH WORLD FORUM ON SPORT、EDUCATION AND CULTURE
OCTOBER 22-24 2006, BEIJING, CHINA

YASUHIRO YAMASHITA
EDUCATION & COACHING DIRECTOR
The 5th World Forum on Sport, Education and Culture, organized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games (BOCOG) in partnership with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), was held from October 22 to 24 2006 at the Beijing International Conference Centre.
I had the opportunity to participate in this Forum on behalf of the IJF as the Education and Coaching director. The purpose of the Forum was to analyze the progress made throughout the world in promoting Olympic education in relation to sport, and with the overarching goal of linking sport to world harmony. This Forum was held in Beijing before the Olympics in 2008; there were over 700 participants from over 150 countries and regions.
The Forum was focused on integrating Chinese and foreign cultures, in concert with the stated slogan of the BOCOG for the 2008 Olympic Games, “One World, One Dream.”
Under the theme “Sport and a world of harmony,” the Forum was conducted by and for representatives and addressed the role of sport, education, and culture in their NOC, NGO and IFs and UNESCO, etc.
The various presentations were made in plenary and specialized sessions and had fruitful discussions in a friendly atmosphere.
Among the many presentations, I was impressed by the plenary session on ”Education and life after the games” given by Mr. Sergey Bubka, a head of IOC Athletes commission, as well as “Training athletes for life after the games” by Frankie Frederiks and Mr.Robert Ctvtlik, both of whom are well-known former top athletes.
Both presentations raised interesting points regarding common problems top athletes have after their games; problems I understand well.
Sport is a tool of education. We learn about each other, respect each other, and grow with each other through mutual understanding. I was impressed there are common ways to approach to education in both judo and other sports.
Thank you very much for providing me with such a wonderful opportunity to participate in and share my ideas about education in sport.
